different tone. before he is sworn in, president obama is shipping in. today, the first family picked up their paint brushes and volunteered in northeast, d.c. >> this is what america's about. this is what we celebrate. >> they started the day of service at their first inauguration, a call for people to volunteer on this specific day. vice-president joe biden spent today in southeast at the d.c. armory, filling care packages for troops. on the national mall, a service summit, with celebrities like eva longoria and chelsea clinton. >> it is inspiring to see all of these people out here. everybody is here to give back. >> and people did not even have to wait. they can participate on service projects on site. >> it shows the love and passion

we have for one another. >> president obama said this service they should be a symbol of how the nation can work together. they spent the day pending a bookshelf. the president says he knows that he is told now that bending down to paint kind of hurts. >> the president said he is ready for the inauguration. >> the theme of this year's inauguration is our people, our future. >> the city has been turned into a fortress, but the capital and security locked down. while there will not be as many people to look after roughly 800,000 people are expected. >> some 300 national guards members from virginia were sworn in today and will be on duty as soon as monday. 600 members of the virginia national guard will help with traffic, crowd management, and

key indications. overall, 6000 national guard members will be on duty during the inauguration. >> a new edition will make its debut monday. the president's limo will have a d.c. license plate. house members went to the white house to direct the president to use the " taxation without representation" license plates. be sure to join us for the inauguration coverage monday. we will kick things off early with good morning washington at 4:30. >> let's go to the critical situation in algeria. the algerian government says 32 militants and at 23 captives were killed over four days of fighting between government forces and militants. and at least one american is among the dead. >> algerian special forces carried out a final assault on

this natural gas complex in the sahara desert, ending a four-day hostage siege. this amateur video seems to show dead bodies lying in the sand. militants linked to al qaeda stormed the algerian facility wednesday. algerian television broadcast these photographs, showing people kneeling in the sand with their hands in the air. another group apparently being guarded by a man in military- style uniforms. fit their goal was foreign hostages. -- their goal was for hostages. they released a few and killed the foreigners on the spot. the algerian army moved in quickly with tanks and helicopters, but the heavis held them off. the hostages were caught in the fallcrossfire. one worker said he barely escaped with his life when algerian helicopters fired at a terrorist convoy, making a run

for it to safety. at least one american is known dead. he is a 58-year-old from houston. the administration is vowing justice. >> nobody will attack the united states of america and get away with it. >> that means this man has a target on his back. the u.s. says he masterminded the attack from a safe haven in the country of mali, a thousand miles away. the u.s. will be sharing intelligence with france to track him down. >> back at home, more about a man who shot and killed in the district overnight. he is 44-roll tracy mcfadden of northeast d.c. the police say he was shot on georgia avenue in northwest. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. the investigators are searching for a mobile van suspect. a shooting at a gun show in raleigh, north carolina, today.

two people were wounded when a 12 gauge shotgun accidentally fired. the owner was unzipping the case when the gun discharged. the two people are expected to make a full recovery. >> and the latest on the gun- control debate, today, hundreds of supporters rallied in annapolis. they are not happy about sweeping gun control legislation that was introduced by gov. martin o'malley this week. richard reeve is back from the effect. richard, they say that new gun laws will not stop the violence. >> you are right, they are not happy. the gun control package is considered one of the most aggressive and country, to ban assault weapons and require licenses of gun owners and extensive background checks. advocates say this will hurt law-abiding citizens and not stop criminals. with their voices, signs, even clothing -- >> what part "shall not be

infringed" does not anybody understand? >> i don't believe in gun restrictions for law-abiding citizens. >> voicing concerns their second amendment rights are being taken away. am i think there deliberately trying to make it harder for law-abiding citizens to be up to protect themselves. >> this rally just over a month after the newtown, conn., shootings, just days after governor martin o'malley proposed sweeping gun proposals. that may have to be licensed to drive a car. you should be licensed to operate a firearm. >> he is calling for new gun licenses, renewable every five years, extensive background checks safety courses, and assault weapons ban. on the streets of annapolis, it has its share of supporters. >> you probably don't need an ak-47 to go deer hunting. m at this rally, most feel more

they're slowly crawling into the 40's at dulles airport and reagan national. still hanging on to 50 degrees in fredericksburg. in terms of the departure from the average daytime high this time of year, anywhere between 11 and 20 degrees warmer than where we normally are for this date. not going to last long. mainly clear overnight. the temperatures fall through the 40's into the 30's. we have two cold fronts on the way in the next 48 hours. the second is the strong cold front will have more of an impact. we will talk about the timing of the potential of snow showers on inauguration day in just a few minutes. >> we are finally hearing from the notre dame football star manti te'o. >> what he said he had to do to keep people from thinking he was crazy. >> i am outside of the baltimore

>> legendary orioles coach earl weaver has passed away. today was supposed to be a date for orioles fans to celebrate. >> it is sad. >> baltimore fans say that earl weaver was the soul of the orioles, and many were shocked when they learned of his death of an apparent heart attack. >> it is like one of your own. >> weaver was a fighter of the field. just 5 foot 6 inches, he was always up for an argument, especially with the umpires. he was ejected 91 times, including once in both games of a doubleheader. >> he has that baltimore attitude, which was hard work and aggressive, but very good

sense of humor. >> the orioles had previously scheduled a fan fast celebration today. as the fans arrive at the baltimore convention center, many learned the sad news of weaver's passing. >> he gave his heart and soul. you could see the fire in his eyes, kicking the dirt, throwing his hat. it is a sad day. >> weaver will forever remain a part of camden yards. last season, a statue was unveiled. >> 26 years since i last put on a baltimore uniform. during that time, and made many trips back to baltimore. each time i came back, i was amazed how the fans remembered. >> fans say that weaver amazed them. many say that his coaching style changed the game itself. >> he was one of the first that looked at one base percentage, pitching, hitting defense which many teams are doing.

sunday afternoon. the temperature a little cooler than today. a frontal system moves through the temperatures remained below average monday. the snow showers developed during the late afternoon, early evening hours, just enough to potentially give us a little dusting. not expecting anything major. but it will be cold monday, if you are planning to be outside for the inauguration. cold tonight, a 28-34, the wind out of the south at 10-15. tomorrow, a lot of sunshine, 45- 50, colder in the mountains. 50 in the district and closer towards the bay. inauguration day bundle up mostly cloudy skies, snow showers likely, 35-40 degrees. a big cool down on the way tuesday and wednesday the high temperatures in town only in the upper 20's. look at the eveninight into wednesday

for the wizards, holding off the nuggets. washington is 3-1 with him back in the lineup. they face the clippers tonight. it will be wanting the heroics from wall again. and the baseball world is mourning the passing of former orioles manager earl weaver. davey johnson played for weaver, and here is his reaction to the news. "i grew up in the minor leagues with earl weaver and we proceeded to spend a significant amount of time together. i will miss him every day." in other college hoops news, uva blew out florida state by 20 g.w. over umass and the georgetown women beat seton hall by 20.
